Erected in 1909 along the main axis of Tsinghua Road, the Old Gate is the old main entrance to Tsinghua University. Nowadays, it has become the most symbolic architecture of Tsinghua Garden and icon of Tsinghua University. The three Chinese characters painted on the gateway read “Tsinghua Garden.” The calligraphic inscription originated from Na Tong, a great scholar and grand minister of the late Qing Dynasty. After the expansion of the residential area in 1933, the former perimeter wall was moved further out. Tsinghua’s West Gate became the new main entrance. Since then, the original gate has been called Er Xiao Men (second campus gate). Over the years, through the four seasons, the Old Gate has witnessed the historical development of Tsinghua University. It symbolizes the continual struggle of Tsinghua’s staff and student for personal improvement.
The first phase of the Tsinghua university library was built in 1919. Expanded twice, the second and third phrases were completed in 1930 and 1991 respectively. It has a total floor space of 27,940 square meters. Although designed by three different architects-Henry Killam Murphy, Yang Tingbao, and Guan Zhaoye-the phases integrate harmoniously and fully respect the surroundings buildings. The latest phase won a National Design Gold Prize. Lower than the nearby Auditorium, the third phase helps form two differently styled areas(library and sports)and harmonizes with the former buildings in terms of architecture style. While presenting a Western appearance, the structure incorporates Chinese traditional planning philosophies such as concealing and enclosing. The Tsinghua University Library has a floor space of 28.000 square meters, provides 2,800 seats for readers, and maintains a rich collection of more than 4 million volumes and 25.000 full-text electronic journals in Chinese and other
Tsinghua Xue Tang was the first classroom building of Tsing Hua Imperial College, which was founded in 1911. A classic German-style building, it was constructed in two stages. The west wing, built between 1909 and 1911, was used for classrooms. The eastern wing, completed in 1916, was used as a student dormitory for many years. The four Chinese characters painted above the main entrance read “Tsing Hua Xue Tang”, the name of the University at its founding. The four esteemed Mentors-Liang Qichao, Wang Kuowei, Tschen Yinkoh, and Chao Yueren of Tsinghua’s Academy of Chinese Learning (founded in 1925), once taught classes here.
Sports is an integral part of Tsinghua’s campus life.
Mr. Zhu Ziqing and Mr. Liang Sicheng were two well-known professors in Tsinghua. In 1948, Mr. Zhu Ziqing published an article expressing his disapproval of the Beiping Government allocated huge sums of money to repair and paint ancient building in the city while Mr. Liang Sicheng held the opposite opinion. After reading Mr. Liang Sicheng's total of 17 pages manuscript, Mr. Zhu Ziqing praised Mr. Liang Sicheng for his unique insights, and their personal relationships were not affected. This gentleman's debate on the "protection of ancient buildings in Beiping" has become a good talk.
