Have you ever heard of the term 'golden passport'? International waters could hold the answers to climate change, and important components of medicines. In this video, Dr Siva Thambisetty, LSE Law School, explains the UN High Seas Treaty – or the Treaty on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) – which sets out how all countries must behave in the high seas to protect marine life and ensure the fair use of any discoveries from these waters. The 20th century was a time of political upheaval for India, with the Indian independence movement gaining momentum before achieving independence from Britain in 1947. Scholars, activists and thinkers at this time took a range of positions on what India’s role should be in the world order. Dr Martin Bayly set out to address how we can understand the works of those from colonised nations whose views were less rigidly anti-colonialist than is often presented, he explores how Indian thinkers of the early 20th century approached issues of world order. in his research. What happens to a country’s economy when half its population dies within a few years? The Black Death did exactly this to England in 1348-50, and historians have been puzzling over how standards of living and patterns of work changed in the Middle Ages for more than a century. To answer this, Dr Jordan Claridge is developing a new dataset of wages earned by men, women and children, working both on annual contracts and more casually, in order to understand wages in medieval England and the massive economic and societal changes of the late Middle Ages. By examining the history of the application of forensic techniques to humanitarian issues, can we now argue that the dead have human rights? LSE’s Dr Claire Moon has been exploring this history, as well as examining the challenges and innovations in the forensics field in contemporary Mexico. Her research project, Human Rights Human Remains: Forensic Humanitarianism and the Politics of the Grave, promises to confront the human rights paradigm by including the dead in the category of who counts as ‘human’. 🔴 Read more about this research in #LSEResearchForTheWorld: 🔴 Find out more about the project:

Although Africa represents 17% of the world's population, it only accounts for 2.3% of global trade as it relies heavily on volatile commodities like fossil fuels, metals and ores and is held back by current policies and unbalanced partnerships. How can we boost trade flows inside and outside the continent to create more jobs and further development? 🔴 See how our social science research and expertise is helping us tackle some of the most pressing issues facing us today on Research For The World, our social science digital magazine: : 🔴 More from LSE: Home ➡️ TikTok ➡️ /lse Facebook ➡️ /lseps Instagram ➡️ /londonschoolofeconomics Twitter ➡️ /lsenews LinkedIn ➡️ /london-school-of-economics #Africa #trade #economy #research
