Cotto opened the fight brilliantly, using his speed, sharp combinations, and slick footwork to control the action. He darted in and out, landing clean jabs and hooks while making Margarito miss. The Puerto Rican’s precision and counterpunching allowed him to dominate the early rounds. But Margarito’s trademark pressure slowly shifted the momentum. Famous for his granite chin and constant forward march, he absorbed Cotto’s best shots and kept throwing heavy punches to the head and body. By the middle rounds, Cotto began to fade as Margarito's nonstop attack wore him down. In the championship rounds, Margarito’s pressure broke through.
