Lord, what an awful movie. I tried. I really, really, really tried to like "Godzilla." I went into it telling myself, "It's just a summer blockbuster. Don't expect it to be something it's not. Just accept it on its own terms and enjoy it." And as the previews started rolling, I honestly thought I could at least not hate it. But lord, what an awful movie. In a movie like this, the special effects are supposed to be the driving force. Let's just say that we've seen the same effects, and better, elsewhere ("Jurassic Park" comes to mind pretty fast). Once you lose those, there isn't all that much else. The dialogue is laughable, the performances are tremendously wooden, and the cutesie cameos and bits elicit more groans than grins. Forget "wait-for-video", this movie is "wait-for-it-to-be-two-for-a-buck-at-Wal-Mart."
The story line might not be the best but the action was good. An Iguana lays its eggs on an island where the French are doing tests with nuclear power. The eggs become contaminated and then Godzilla is created. Godzilla then travels to New York to nest. The action is brilliant pity the same thing can't be said about Maria Pitillo's acting. 8 out of 10.
Here's the story of this movie: One day Mr. Devlin came to the studio CEOs and told them he has this great idea for a couple of trailers. They made the trailers and they did really well, then, one CEO said: "So where's the movie? We spent all that cash in the trailers, we need a movie to fill them up damn it!". So Mr. Devlin needed to do a script quick to fill up the trailers with some movie. He ran to the video store and returned the copies of Star Wars, Alien, and V he used for Independence Day. Unfortunately the late charges only left him money for Jurassic Park. The rest is history.
What's everyones problem here? This version of Godzilla is an excellent movie!! Whoever rates it less than 5 must be compleatly stupid. The acting from Matthew Broderick is good...its a whole lot better than the original Godzilla. If you havent seen this movie go and see it right now!! You wont be dissappointed.
