Publisher's Summary In this stunning best seller praised as "our era's Handmaid's Tale", a fierce new power has emerged - and only women have it (Washington Post). In The Power, the world is a recognizable place: There's a rich Nigerian boy who lounges around the family pool; a foster kid whose religious parents hide their true nature; an ambitious American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family. But then a vital new force takes root and flourishes, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power: They can cause agonizing pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world drastically resets. From award-winning author Naomi Alderman, The Power is speculative fiction at its most ambitious and provocative, at once taking us on a thrilling journey to an alternate reality, and exposing our own world in bold and surprising ways. ©2017 Naomi Alderman (P)2017 Hachette Audio

The story is gripping, excellent, masterful -- and the narration is THE BEST of any audiobook I've listened to over the last decade. This book is incredible.
First and foremost this is a fun and entertaining piece of science fiction. This book isn't preachy nor does it have an agenda, but by clearly describing a world with an inverse power structure, it successfully shakes off the apathy that comes with growing up in our current one. As a man, there were certain parts that I found terrifying and yet I realize that they were simply describing very real and commonplace scenarios that women have to accept every day. Although the story deals with gender, its also a study on the politics of any kind of power structure. Great narrator and production.
What a ride! The Power delivers a riveting story line that will leave you at the edge of your seat (and squirming a little at times) while being laced with commentary on gender lines and historical narrative.
The premise of this book is great. The writing is heavy and self-indulgent. The narration is AWFUL. The accents are terrible and very distracting. I listened to an hour and can’t make it further.
A friend recommended the book. I struggled to remain with the story and after 4 hours realized it was because I couldn't sympathize with any of the characters. As a woman who has served in areas of the world where women are treated the way men end up being treated, it was VERY hard to listen to the violence against men and rape accounts. I would not have listened t ok the whole book if not for the respect I have for the man who shared it with me.
I found many elements of this book to be well written and poignant, and the performance was very engaging, however the general portrayal of a reverse in power felt simplistic to me despite the character development and intriguing twists. Also, I didn't need the graphic rape and murder to complete such a thought experiment. Ultimately, I wouldn't recommend it.
If you’re a woman and you’re awake you need to read this now. It will change you.
many of us wonder what would happen if the balance of power was flipped on its head. This book starts to explore that idea, and has some very graphic and disturbing scenes that I certainly hope would not become reality. However, it was very well written, and the story took turns that I definitely was not expecting. thank you for the ride.
I typically love dystopian novels.I devour them. This one was harder for me to listen to than most others. The first half of the book I found myself pleased with the way women were harnessing and using their power.I was cheering them on. Then... then things got ugly.More ugly than I could have ever expected.I felt like I was listening to The Handmaid's Tale with the gender roles reversed.I felt myself questioning everything about my previous feelings of joy and pride for the women.I felt disgusted by my earlier thoughts of, "it's about time women were in power." I kept thinking"Women would never do this.", "They would not treat men that way."The startling truth is we would. We would. Women would flip the script and be exactly the same if power roles were reversed. It disgusts me to say that.I'm disappointed in myself for feeling it,but after reading this, I know it to be true.Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
The audio performance was perfection. the book itself is one of my favorite new pieces. I loved the whole experience and have raved about both since finishing.
