Karate was increasingly moving toward safer, point-based competition, while Muay Thai had been forged inside the professional ring through years of hard competition, devastating kicks, knees, elbows, and clinch fighting. For Masutatsu Oyama and the fighters of the Oyama Dojo, this was more than a martial arts exhibition. It was a test. Could Japanese Karate survive against Muay Thai on its own ground?
