They called Akira Masuda a Kyokushin monster. But that word only tells half of his story. In March 1991, Masuda became the twelfth person to successfully complete the legendary Hyaku Nin Kumite — the 100-Man Kumite. For more than three hours, he fought one opponent after another with almost no meaningful rest, eventually completing all 100 rounds in 3 hours and 22 minutes. He also fought some of the most respected names in full-contact karate, including Andy Hug, Gerard Gordeau, Michel Wedel, and Michael Thompson, while consistently finishing among the top competitors in major Kyokushin tournaments. But one of the most fascinating chapters of his career was a fight he actually lost. Against Andy Hug, Masuda walked away without the victory—but left such a physical toll on the eventual winner that the fight became another part of his legend. Yet the story of Akira Masuda doesn't end inside the tatami. After his competitive career, he built a dojo, wrote about karate philosophy, and dedicated himself to developing the next generation of practitioners. The fighter once known as a Kyokushin monster eventually became something else. A teacher. A mentor. A man whose greatest legacy may not be the opponents he defeated—but the people he helped build.
