Taking place 1 month after WrestleMania XV, many believe Backlash 99 was the show WrestleMania should've been. The main event features a Mania rematch; Stone Cold Steve Austin vs The Rock. This time it's Austin defending the WWF Championship but there's a lot more at stake this time. Vince McMahon wanted Steve Austin to have his Smoking Skull Championship belt handed back to him (seeing as Vince had too many ongoing issues with The Undertaker), but Shane McMahon decided to give the belt to The Rock instead. Austin wanted his property back, and he promised to get his Smoking Skull Belt back by defeating Rock in the Backlash main event. If Rock wins he not only keeps Stone Cold's custom belt, he also becomes WWF Champion once again.
