We recently launched a new webinar series, Leading for Change: A Fireside Conversation" hosted by Eddie Mandhry, Director for Africa and the Middle East at Yale. The first webinar took place on October 23, 2020. Eddie Mandhry was joined by Simidele Adeagbo, the first Nigerian Winter Olympian and the first African and black woman to compete in Skeleton at the Olympics. This series features inspirational speakers from across Africa and diaspora to create space for conversations about leadership. The third in our series of "African Women as Pillars of Resilience," public webinars, took place on 16 November 2020. The focus of this webinar, conducted in both English and French, was "Mitigating the Economic Impacts of the Pandemic on African Women." The event was moderated by Stephanie Busari, member of the Yale World Fellows Class of 2020 and journalist and editor at CNN Worldwide, and the panelists were Martha Karua, former minister of justice and current presidential candidate for Kenya, Maria Kiwanuka, senior advisor to the Ugandan president on finance, and Fafa Benzerouki Sid Lakhdar, former chairwoman of the National Human Rights Council for Algeria. The Yale MacMillan Center Council on Latin American and Iberian Studies, Fox International Fellowship Program, and Program on Peace and Development are delighted to welcome the Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, to deliver a talk titled, “Strengthening Democracy in Latin America: Progress on Peace and Development.” The talk is followed by an informal conversation between the Secretary General and Yale scholars and students. This event is part of the Latin American Policy Leader Series, which welcomes leading figures in Latin American government and civil society to visit the Yale campus and engage in conversation with the Yale community about the region.

Monkeypox is a rare infectious disease first discovered in 1958 after outbreaks occurred in monkeys kept for research. It is a more benign version of smallpox that is endemic in parts of Central and West Africa. During this panel conversation, we will discuss what is monkeypox, how concerned we should be in the U.S. and around the world, and measures that state, national, and international organizations are taking to monitor and address this issue.
