On August 25, 2018, the M-1 Challenge 96 international tournament took place at the M-1 Arena in St. Petersburg. In the co-main event, Daniel "Agent Orange" Swain (USA), 18-8-1, fought Viktor Kolesnik (Kuznya), 14-3-1. Daniel Swain had been competing in professional mixed martial arts for eight years at the time, and during that time, he had fought 27 professional fights, winning 18 of them. His first appearance in M-1 Challenge came in 2014, when he fought to a draw against Zalimbeg Omarov, who was making his debut in the organization. After a long absence from Russian fans, Swain resurfaced in M-1 Global in May 2018. He defeated three foreign fighters, fought to a draw with the tenacious Korean Yong Bok Kil in his debut, and delivered the fight of the year against Nate Landwehr, in which both opponents brutally beat each other, with the initiative constantly changing hands. The future M-1 Challenge featherweight champion from the United States won that fight by a majority decision. But Viktor was determined to reach his arch-rival and take the coveted title from him through a series of victories, and for now, another powerful American fighter stood in his way.
