The Smackdown series on Sony's PS2 was proving to be a huge success, Gamecube owners were left with the WrestleMania X8 and WrestleMania XIX games that left a lot to be desired in terms of variety. When Day of Reckoning was finally released, the media praised the game, calling it a suitable answer to the Smackdown series that had been dominating the wrestling game landscape.
