Vaccines play an important role in promoting public health, and yet we still don’t understand how to guarantee safety and efficacy in a new vaccine. The COVID-19 pandemic has cast a strong light on this current biomedical question. Aaron Esser-Kahn’s lab focuses on studying how vaccines work at the molecular level and using that knowledge to develop new therapeutic approaches to improve the safety and efficacy of vaccination. Esser-Kahn will present work on both the fundamental molecular aspects of an innate immune response that underpin a vaccine and the manipulation of that response to improve current and future vaccines. Infectious disease expert Dr Emily Landon on how coronavirus will change public health, medical technology and the way we deliver care. In this episode of “COVID 2025: Our World in the Next 5 Years,” Landon discusses building a robust frontline defense against future outbreaks through a dedicated corps of epidemiologists that would respond to future outbreaks by using contact tracing on smartphones.
