On July 9, 2011, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA, former two-division world champion Paul Williams faced unbeaten Cuban southpaw Erislandy Lara in a WBC light-middleweight title eliminator. Coming into the fight, Williams was 39–2 (27 KOs), while Lara was 15–0–1 (10 KOs). Lara used his speed, movement and powerful straight left hand to repeatedly catch Williams, while Williams tried to overwhelm him with a much higher volume of punches and constant pressure. Lara appeared to land cleaner, more effective shots throughout much of the fight. After 12 rounds, Williams was awarded a highly controversial majority decision, with scores of 116–114, 115–114, and 114–114.
