This is the worst movie I've ever suffered through and I couldn't even make it to the end. From the monotone monologue to the crass cheap humor, this takes sleeper to a new level. I waited for the movie to pick up for what seemed hours, but since I didn't make it through even half, I guess it wasn't hours. The movie was so bad, it actually ticked me off because I spent $1.00 on the rental. It wasn't worth a dollar. From the dirty, slurring, mumbling blonde to the tired old hippie friends, the plot had nowhere to turn and turn it didn't. It went from bad to worse and then beyond hell in a steady downhill slide. Save yourself a dollar and don't bother watching this.
Roger Greenberg(Ben Stiller) a lonely forty something year old, who is purposely doing nothing with his life, and does not want to be drawn into anything. Moves to L.A. to house sit for his brother. During this time he meets up with Ivan(Rhys Ifans) an old friend from college. He also starts a connection with Florence(Greta Gerwig) his brothers assistant. But will this be a good changing experience for Greenberg? Quite a performance from Ben Stiller, he really made it hard to like Greenberg cause he for the most part comes across has an unlikable person, but you do feel his loneliness. Rhys Ifans is also surprisingly good in a dramatic role. Greta Gerwig is also outstanding in her role as Florence. The movie does start out slow, but it gets better has goes on. One great drama for 2010
Life is wasted on people, remarks our main character in the film. I would go further and say that life is wasted on the character Greenberg. Can't grasp why anyone thought this character would be at all interesting - in any manner, shape or form - be it in a positive or negative sense. OK, so he is a little messed up, but wait for it; aren't we all in some way? OK, so he is also a bit of a smart ass, rather selfish most of the time and he is also total jerk. Does this make him worthy of mention. If he is so interesting then aren't we all? Hopefully no one will think it important enough so as to sit through one and a half hours of our dreary boring lives, possibly sprinkled with one or two interesting or likable moments, possibly doing some unselfish deed and action, that most humans enjoy during their existence. Big deal.
It was not entertaining at all! Actually, it was a very slow, and sad movie. If you want to be entertained, just make yourself a favor, don't watch this! It just dragged painfully without a glimpse of hope or a twist or any interesting character. I don't have much to say about it since there wasn't much in it, but I have to complete ten lines, so this can be submitted! this is the first time I write here. I registered specifically to write this because I felt awful after seeing this movie! line 9. line ten! I hope that will do!! I'll repeat the first few lines! see how this movies is so depressing! "It was not entertaining at all! Actually, it was a very slow, and sad movie. If you want to be entertained, just make yourself a favor, don't watch this! Actually it's not nothing, even if the main character seems to think that it is. Even writing or sitting or thinking about something, is ... well something. So while Ben Stiller is again a quiet character who sometimes goes completely nuts (something he is very good at), this movie does have more to offer than that. It's almost a companion piece to the "Whatever works" movie by Woody Allen. Almost and only when Stillers character gets his philosopher inside on. Or just his I hate this and that side of his character. While we do get a bit of a back-story, we never fully get him completely. But that isn't a bad thing. A human being is far more complex than to pigeon hole him/her into something. A really quiet movie (overall), that will speak to people who like a good (personal) drama.
To rate as the worst movie I have seen this one has to compete with a lot of bad ones. I think the essential fact that makes this one so bad is that there is no one in the film that you can really like. OK, so I liked the dog and the English guy was tolerable. But the girl (Leigh) was a * and the guy (Stiller) was the male equivalent of a *. Actually, the girl was kind of a stupid * and so was the guy. I sat through the movie waiting for a laugh and got none. Stiller was so annoying in the role that I kept hoping something would happen to him. It was such a relief when the movie finally ended, I was tired of dealing with these people. Save your money, don't go and don't rent it on DVD.
I didn't quite know what to expect when I first watched this film. I suppose I was expecting a witty romantic film with some little cracks in the paintwork if you know what I mean. However Ben Stiller showed a side I hadn't really seen before and it seemed to work for him, however the story didn't seem to go anywhere. Almost as if the writer had started but just kept repeating themselves over and over. Perhaps this film is meant to show that there is a chance at a normal life after psychiatric treatment. Definitely not a film I would rush to see.
If you just got kicked out of the house and need someplace with sticky floors and uncomfortable seats to go to sleep for a couple of hours, then this is your kind of movie! I guarantee that no spontaneous outburst of laughter or any other kind of human emotion (unless you count snoring, since this movie may have just officially made snoring a human emotion) will disturb your slumber. Boring story line, bland dialogue, minimal character development, and WOW, the ending was... incomplete. I, like most people who saw this movie, was lured in by the genius of Ben Stiller, the quirkiness of Rhys Ifans and the somewhat intuitively funny movie poster which had me primed for a heady comedy/drama. Do not fall for this clever trickery as I had. Instead, find a nice park bench somewhere and enjoy some wonderful spring weather for two hours.
