Although the premise of this film is nice (loser goes back to school and becomes cool), Drew's appearance, and her talents, do not help this flawed movie shine any brighter. The entire cast's relatively lame performances bring this film down as well. It's a cute film, but unworthy of Drew's talents. All in all, see this only if there's nothing else playing in your area, or if you are a Drew fan.
The idea behind the movie is that a older woman who graduated college and works for a newspaper is going undercover as a senior in high school. It's non-believable and Dew doesn't work as a teenager. The script has a few moments of goodness, but overall it is boring, lackluster and filled with idiocies.
I thought this movie was great, not only because of it's storyline but because it was portrayed greatly by the excellent cast. I read that Drew Barrymore wasn't exceptional as Josie Geller because she is beautiful. Yes she maybe but in the movie she played outside herself, which brought on a plain girl searching for who she is in the world. The story is sweet and definitely for the hopeless romantics out there, I for sure am. David Arquette is mad as her brother Rob, and Michael Vartan is gorgeous as Sam Coulson. Leelee Sobieski did an excellent job as her mate Aldys, someone who wasn't afraid to be herself. I think this movie should get more credit rather than being branded as a "teeny boppy" flick
'm not a big Drew Barrymore fan but this movie was kind of good. I didn't rush to get it when it came out I thought it would be stupid but i finially pick up in 2001 and sat down and watch and it was not that bad. Drew Barrymore was very funny in here even through she acted stupid it was funny... This movie is good for a laugh. David Arguette was great in here it was differet from his scream role Dewey Riley. I never thought see him in this kind of role but he pulled it of. This movie is good but it not great. I seen better but it not bad to pick it up one and while to get a luagh I give it a 7 out of 10
It's more than your average summer teen flick... This movie made me feel real bad in the sad bits and even worse in the happy ending(that's not really a spoiler- it's an American teen flick for god sake!)... I also had similar nerds in my school and I was quite a creep to them too. Nothing like what was done in the movie, but that's not saying much. The happy ending was another sad touch as I know in real life those outcasts usually lose. The movie mixes humor well with some extremely well done sad scenes and Drew Barrymore is a great actress: her Josie reminded me a lot of a girl I used to make fun of in my class... Boy, do I feel like a jerk. The story is a collection of cliches mixed together with a nice new spin. The ending is a bit weird, but interesting and enjoyable. This is my favorite teen movie of summer '99 (with the competition being "She's All That" and "10 Things I Hate About You").
Yawn! Let's see, this film end at some dumb high school prom like all the other stupid teeny bopper movie do. Man! I want something new, I don't want the dumb same old crap that I've already seen like a billion of times. If you really want to make an good movie, TRY MAKING YOUR OWN Than copy other people's work. No Stars
This teen-oriented comedy is a cut or two above most. I found it highly enjoyable and very funny, thanks in no small part to the charm of Drew Barrymore, who demonstrates a continued flair for light comedy that started to blossom in "The Wedding Singer." She's very endearing here as a slightly daffy "plain jane" copy editor who gets her first big news assignment....to go undercover at a high school and get the scoop on today's high schoolers. Her efforts to blend in with the 'cool kids' make for some hilarious and surprisingly pointed scenes that will strike home with many. A vast array of familiar faces in the supporting cast and some smooth, assured direction by Raja Gosnell help smooth over the sometimes predictable plot. This one's a winner. 3 *** out of 4 stars.
