Publisher's Summary Audie Award Finalist, Classic, 2014 F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel of the Roaring Twenties is beloved by generations of readers and stands as his crowning work. This new audio edition, authorized by the Fitzgerald estate, is narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain). Gyllenhaal's performance is a faithful delivery in the voice of Nick Carraway, the Midwesterner turned New York bond salesman, who rents a small house next door to the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby. There, he has a firsthand view of Gatsby’s lavish West Egg parties - and of his undying love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. After meeting and losing Daisy during the war, Gatsby has made himself fabulously wealthy. Now, he believes that his only way to true happiness is to find his way back into Daisy’s life, and he uses Nick to try to reach her. What happens when the characters’ fantasies are confronted with reality makes for a startling conclusion to this iconic masterpiece. This special audio edition joins the recent film - as well as many other movie, radio, theater, and even video-game adaptations - as a fitting tribute to the cultural significance of Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age classic, widely regarded as one of the greatest stories ever told. ©1925 Charles Scribner's Sons. Jake, please stick to just acting the performance was not very good hard to follow as voice inflection just wasn’t all that good, I would look for another version if I was to listen to this again
I listened to this because me 11th grade son has to read it. This book is horrible. I feel sorry for him that he is required to read it. The Narration by Jake Gyllenhaal is excellent.
my son had to listen to this book for his English class.... we found the book very boring.Long winded and with a lot of details that don't really seem relevant to the story.I don't see what is so great about this book and can't recommend it. I think that Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, Little Men, Sense and Sensibility, or many other classics would be more interesting.I really didn't care for the story at all. Jake Gyllenhall did a great job as the narrator!!!
It had been suggested to me to listen to an audiobook narrated by a Hollywood actor/actress, as they are naturally entertaining. But gyllenhaal’s performance was sub standard. When you read a sentence with incorrect inflections and emphasis on the words, it MUST be re-recorded. But besides that, it was a low-energy and rushed narration. The story was good. It’s so famous and heralded as perhaps the greatest American novel. I’d have to re-read it before I make a final judgement, but my final feeling is the book was overrated.
Listening to Gatsby reminded me why some authors clearly stand out from others as masters of the craft. Fitzgerald's use of language is a delightful reminder of the what storytelling can be. Gyllenhaal's presentation enhanced the joy of listening.
