In 2011, the University of Chicago launched the Arts and Public Life initiative in an effort to enrich its cultural interactions with the city and local artists. One major programmatic component of the initiative includes artist residencies. In partnership with the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture, Arts and Public Life welcomed three Chicagoans as artists-in-residence. These videos introduce artists Faheem Majeed, Cathy Alva Mooses, and Eliza Myrie. Read more:

A months-long ARG called "Terrarium" was an ambitious #UChicago faculty-led project meant to encourage incoming students to work collaboratively, develop a sense of community and learn the kind of rigorous inquiry at the heart of UChicago’s core values. Developed by Patrick Jagoda, the ARG is set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2049, Terrarium provided clues and puzzles via online videos and group chats over the summer to help students develop innovative proposals about climate change. The University of Chicago Library has received more than 2,700 vintage prints by celebrated photographer Vivian Maier, few of which have ever been published or displayed. Collector John Maloof made the donation to the UChicago Library, where they will be preserved and made accessible to researchers in the Special Collections Research Center. The gift includes more than 1,200 black-and-white and 1,400 color prints that Maier made, ranging from her travels around the world to her street photography in Chicago that has received widespread critical acclaim. Because Maier chose to make the prints herself, the collection provides a rare glimpse into her creative process and the photos to which she was drawn.
