Black Cantabs: History Makers

The student-run Cambridge Union has hosted debates for over 200 years. Arguably its most famous debate was between two intellectuals from the USA about race relations and the American Dream. We take a look back on the legacy of the 1965 debate between James Baldwin and William F. Buckley Jr with the help of undergraduate student Neha and PhD candidate Darold Cuba. Diane Abbott encourages people to visit the forthcoming exhibition Black Cantabs: History Makers, in which she is featured as one of Cambridge's black alumni.

During Black History Month student artists of varying degrees of experience gathered for the first drawing event organised by the African-Caribbean Society (ACS). Taking some inspiration from the portraits at the Black Cantabs exhibition at the University Library the students sought to celebrate the various aspects of black culture from around the world. The Black Cantabs exhibition comes to an end at the University Library on the 22nd December 2018:

Black students have been learning at the University of Cambridge for the last 250 years. Now the stories of black alumni are being told by the Black Cantabs Research Project. Dr Njoki Wamai and Surer Mohamed from Queens' College says their stories show why 'We need representation' to inspire the next generation of bright students. Mary Onoŋokpono is a Nigerian-British writer working on a MPhil in African Studies. Her short story 'Firewater', about a child's perspective of the Atlantic slave trade, has been awarded first prize by a competition for emerging African writers.

Richelle George from Saint Lucia has worked for NGOs across the world, helping activists and aid workers in Europe, Africa and Asia. Richelle offers some insight in how she got involved with global initiatives while studying at HSPS at Trinity College. George Augustus Polgreen Bridgetower was a Afro-European violinist who earned a music degree from Trinity Hall in 1811. He was so good that Ludwig van Beethoven wrote music especially for him. See his portrait at the Black Cantabs exhibition at the University Library, for more details visit:

Millions around the world this year are reflecting on the lives that were changed irrevocably, and those that were lost in the centenary year marking the end of the First World War. Some 65 million soldiers were mobilised across Europe during the First World War. Among them was Trinity College, Cambridge, student David Louis Clemetson. Cambridge alumna Sarah Lusack tells the story of Clemetson, who put a promising law career on hold to enlist, becoming one of the British Army’s only black officers. He was killed in action at the Somme 100 years ago today. Clemetson’s life is commemorated in new exhibition Black Cantabs: History Makers, as his portrait joins 14 others to line the Royal Corridor of Cambridge University Library ( ).
