I am not sure what the low reviews are about, because I enjoyed this movie very much. It wasn't low budget at all. It's a fast paced murder mystery in a small country town. The dialogue is tightly written and more realistic than most movies and the characters have some depth to them. The main character and his family are very likable, and the other characters in the film are three-dimensional. Even the villains or the people you think are villains have some redeeming qualities. There are a couple of action scenes which not excessive and they add to the story rather than being just filler. I would prefer more films like this than the usual Hollywood garbage.
This film is a standard murder mystery but many of the elements are ridiculous like an Army veteran sheriff who takes a lot of stupid risks because he's "tough." No police officer would do what this guy does. The two odious murder victims seemed to be oblivious to the fact that many people wanted to kill them although it's made obvious to the audience many times. The characters also utter some really stupid lines, as if the script was written by a teenager. This could have been a good movie if the plot didn't have so many holes and the script was written by someone who had a better understanding of police work and rural culture. Good actors, nicely shot on location, but the weak script undermines it all.
Melodramatic in the second half, only heightened by a score lacking all subtlety. The acting is sketchy at times, but watchable. It's a PG film, definitely aiming to be Family Friendly, so cutting it a bit of slack is in line. I didn't crack the murder case before the Sheriff did, and the outcome did make sense, so it gets an extra point from me. No need to slam it, people. I've seen much, MUCH worse.
I like several of the actors in this. I don't think it is the acting that is so terrible, or even the direction. It is the script, full of stereotypes or cookie-cutter characters. The lines are delivered as well as they can be for something written so terribly. I couldn't wait for this to make it on INSP for free, and now I am glad I did not pay to watch it earlier. Pretty bad, unfortunately.
Actually didnt mind the story, liked it and could be a series BUT stop the horrible back ground music !!!!! Understand the whole hartfield macoy feud fine in the Appalachian hills but again got a headache from the over the top dramatic background music.
I thought this movie delivered. I thought it had a good storyline, the characters were interesting enough and the mystery of who had committed the murder wasn't predictable. All in all it's better than most of the terrible movies put out by mainstream Hollywoood these days.
I thought this was terrific. You absolutely believed in the feud and indeed, all the characters were totally believable. Well acted, beautiful scenery at times and yet the jarring music, which in my mind brilliantly portrayed the situation and setting, made you feel totally uneasy. This keeps you guessing right until the end. I don't care what other people rated this, I thought it was a little gem.
