Really wanted this to be funny as the cast looked great but it was unwatchable drivel.
Horrible Histories: The Movie - Rotten Romans is a bad comedy and nowhere near as good as the TV show. Nick Frost is really good and Lee Mack is surprisingly funny but other than that it's bad. The majority of the jokes aren't funny, it looks cheap and the songs are awful. The original cast are definitely missed.
I wish they had Horrible History when I was young I'd of learned a hell of a lot more then I did at school. I've always enjoyed watching the Horrible History TV show and find it proper funny so was looking forward to bathe movie. It was good but could of been a lot better and funnier, with a star studded cast I was expecting a bit more, it felt a bit stretched out in places.
I thought that I would be in for a spoof movie when I sat down to watch the 2019 movie "Horrible Histories: The Movie - Rotten Romans" from director Dominic Brigstocke. But it wasn't really a spoof such as "Scary Movie" and the likes. So I was somewhat disappointed with what transpired on the screen. For a comedy, "Horrible Histories: The Movie - Rotten Romans" was pretty mundane and somewhat boring actually. I don't think I laughed even once throughout the course of the movie. Well, granted, I didn't finish the movie. I had enough of the ordeal when there was a mere 20 minutes left. I managed to stick with the movie for that long, hoping that the movie would pick up and shift into a proper gear. That never happened. Despite the fact that the movie have some established actors and actresses on the cast list, such as Nick Frost, Warwick Davis and Kim Cattrall then the movie just was beyond salvageable given its abysmal storyline and mundane characters that had the appeal of wet cardboard. Sure, the movie did have some nice costumes and good sets, but those props did little to alleviate for the lack of proper storyline and script. However, it did make the ordeal a little bit more painless to look at, I will say that much. This was a very weak jab at comedy, and the movie came and went without leaving a lasting impression, much less a dent in the history of comedy cinema. My rating of "Horrible Histories: The Movie - Rotten Romans" is a mere three out of ten stars. I simply can't find any reason for why I would encourage you to spend your time, money or effort on this atrocity.
If you're a big fan of horrible histories, and you love it like you love your first born, then you'll probably like it. Sadly, I don't think it worked on the big screen. The TV series is sharper, funnier and more easily watched. A good effort and fun for the kids (if they love it) but a hard sell for anyone who isn't an ardent fan!
I Go in with an open mind like always and after 10 minutes of comedy that just isn't working you think I'll wait a little longer to make my mind up, like give it the best chance. I can find No positives in this film sadly, oh and the musical numbers, I simply couldn't handle it. I would of turned it off if I was watching on the BBC at home on the TV.
Honestly, this really wasn't funny. It's also very politically correct. If that's your schtick, this is your movie. Fart jokes are one of the better things in the story. History is irrelevant for a show called "Horrible Histories". Score: D+
This movie suggests what it would have been like if the Monty Python crew had been allowed to continue making bad unfunny movies over the last decades. They burnt out after the second season of their TV show (at least Cleese had the smarts to leave the show) and made a couple funny features and then garbage. That's this film in a nutshell. It's Bad Brit humour watered down by political correctness -- which is apparently destroying the world. Just terrible.
I love the TV show so I thought this would be fun to see. It had the feeling that this was a great idea but then we need to fill time to make a decent running time, with little thought to the content. Some jokes overdone especially the Roman numerals. I found the funniest bits of the movie were the little references to The life of Brian, which probably shows my age. I think kids who love the show will enjoy this movie more than I.
I must admitI didn't have high hopes for this but the film didn't sway from the horrible histories TV and stage formula and it worked well. If you expecting high brow then you will be disappointed but if it's a top British cast with very British jokes you want then you are in luck. The film passes very quickly and, as the plot is aimed at kids, it isn't hard to follow. It obviously isn't high budget and very much feels like a horrible histories TV special but that doesn't detract from the fun. The film is a little bit of a slow burner but soon catches on. It's harmless family fun for a 90 minutes and I even learnt a few things while laughing, the whole key to horrible histories success.
