Funny film by Jim Carrey, dark in places yet laugh out loud funny, his dunk on jack black is hilarious. It would of been good if there was a sequel, it would at least be better that dumb and dumber to.
Bill Maher said that this is one of his favourite Jim Carrey films, I must totally agree. It is up there with dumb and dumber. There must be a cult following to this. It's like you either hate it or love it. I love it. I watch this at least 5 time per year. It never get old. Timeless masterpiece work of Jim Carrey, the cable guy.
This film is a classic Carrey film. I don't really know why it's so funny but it is. Easy watching and Carrey is his usual character which he does so well.
It's indeed a typical Jim Carrey movie. But to tell you the truth I never really liked Jim Carrey. Sure, he has talent, but that talent annoys me. Especially in this one. This movie is also a thriller. The acting is OK. But all of them are really annoying. The story wasn't that good. But I guess it was fair. It's about a Cable Guy who's lonely and needs a friend. They really wanted you to hate The Cable Guy, that's for sure. It's as if they wanted us to hate Jim Carrey's character. I wouldn't say I "hated" his character. Just found him annoying as hell. Ben Stiller did awful direction too. The guy is pretty good at Comedy, but face it, he isn't a director. I recommend this to fans of Jim Carrey or Matthew Broderrick. Apart from that, it's best to skip this Comedy/thriller. 3/10
THE CABLE GUY (1996) *** Jim Carrey, Matthew Broderick, Leslie Mann, George Segal, Diane Baker, Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, Andy Dick. Cameo: Eric Roberts. Jet black comedy with obnoxious Carrey (in a complex comic/creepy performance) as a friend-hungered cable guy who hooks up Broderick with free cable and a whole lot more than he bargained for. Kind of "Ace Venutra" meets "Fatal Attraction" but surprisingly with a deeply disturbing message: tv can rot your brain. Fiendishly funny and genuinely unsettling at times with Broderick making the most as the straight man with some moments of normal guy in Twilight Zone mode. Stiller (who directed) makes a cameo as a celebrity on trial for murder and the broadcast chain of events leading to a heady climax. May not be for everyone but shows some range in rubber faced Carrey; he pulls it off. Best bit: dinner and entertainment at Medieval Times and Porno Password!
I think it's a shame that this movie is rated so low here (5,4 when I started to write about this movie). Maybe it's because people didn't understand anything about the story (it's a weird sort of movie). The theme of the film is excellent and Jim Carrey is great (not really laughable, a bit sad actually). I give it a 8/10.
Cable guy Chip Douglas is a guy with weirdness. Having met Steven Kovac, he wants to become his best friend. After getting to know Chip better, Stephen realizes that this friendship is fraught with consequences, and decides to get rid of a new acquaintance. But it won't be easy at all.
There are several movies that were ahead of their time, but none stick out quite as much as The Cable Guy. Coming out at a time where Jim Carey could do whatever movie he wanted having become the biggest movie star on the planet overnight, Jim chose this amazing movie. Unfortunately, this was a dark comedy and the people of the 90s weren't ready for a great movie that is hilariously dark. Highly recommend!
