the great war
An amazing story and truly makes you grateful for everyone who fought for our freedom.
Yes, there are some similarities to Saving Private Ryan (but that was a good movie, right?) and so is this one! Normally, I would rate this a 7 or 8 but somebody needs to offset the trolls that have sandbagged this movie because they are either too ignorant of military history and military life - or just hyper-critical of anything that doesn't fit into their myopic worldview. Please note - veterans rate this movie fairly highly. So does this 33-year combat vet!
This movie is just the worst. copying things from saving private ryan and band of brothers, horrible depiction of anything resembling war or humans for that matter, bad acting, the absolute worst directing, and although ive seen zane (especially) and perlman in some really awful movies, this one im sure was embarrassing for them. you will become stupider for having watched this movie
I applaud the lengths this movie has taken to bring attention to WW1, which seems to have become our nation's "forgotten war." It also addresses the topic of race relations within the military order at that time in history. Although only 20% of the African-American doughboys sent overseas were assigned to combat units, but all rendered invaluable service to the cause, often at the cost of their lives. Their white officers - indeed, any white soldiers who ever came into contact with them - knew it. And they knew it themselves, too. They returned home with a great sense of what they had done for their country and what it owed them in return, as well as a vision, which they glimpsed in France, of what a country that wasn't afraid to repay that debt looked like. That war generated nothing less than the birth of the modern civil rights movement.
I understand why people are giving this movie straight 10 and not judging that but even dialogue between officer and soldiers feels off and too formal. I saw one enemy soldier dying with a smile on his face... Of course there are negatives but movie itself is still okay but there are some points which doesn't let you enjoy it as much as it could be done.
It's just a really bad remake of Saving Private Ryan. The bunker scene without the bunker, the same church scene without the church, the same first meeting of private ryan just without a tank, the same scene deciding to fight just without a rustic French village and if i'm not mistaken the same music and dialog. Obviously the writer/director would get a F if this was a school assignment which it looks like, but in the real world I'm surprised he hasn't been sued by Steven Spielberg.
What a waste of time. A brutal biopic of WW1 and historic prejudices. Really didn't enjoy watching this from fairly early on. Don't understand why people need to recall things that are best forgotten. Nothing to say that hasn't already been said many times. The inaccuracies are plentiful, so plentiful they distract from any narrative this movie had.
This movie is not great but it's not terrible. Theatrics, I'll give it 6. Filming, I'll give it 4 (that's being generous). The story of the movie, I'll give it 8. History is lost without those willing to spread its legacy and message. Don't forget history!
Might as well call it click bait because im sure i sat down to watch a movie called THE GREAT WAR and yet what i got was a cheap version of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
