Give me some more
Since this Covid virus and not having streaming ability I have been buying Indie movies. Some are good some really suck! And this is one of them!!! If you want a good B-movie vampire flick, I suggest Modern Vampires! You'll get your T&A and a lot of laughs from a cast talented men and women! All I could think watching this was who put the money up to have this made? If I was handed this script I would of burned it first and then wipe my hind side with the ashes!
Low budget, novice actors, simplistic plot, continuity errors but still worth a quick watch. You can watch it free on Youtube or watch the 10 minute longer version on Prime. You'll know what extra parts you'll see in the longer version as some are in the trailer. It is meant to be erotic and at times it is but not enough to be considered an erotic thriller or horror movie. Yet not vampiric enough to be a good vampire movie. The acting is okay at best although I did think the lead actress playing Jennifer was very realistic as a regular, hard working person who didn't party. I would like to see her in other things. The overall plot line is full of holes which the director didn't even try to plug. One of the most obvious is Lt. Peterson, outside and calling for backup, but we never see him again yet there is no indication he was chased or killed. He was waiting for the SWAT team to arrive but when they did, he wasn't there. Just gone from the story line. It was interesting that although the vampires seem to heal, they can still be killed and we see at least three shot and they seem to stay dead. Really not worth watching but if it is on Youtube and you are bored then watch it.
I can imagine that if you dig the message the movie tries to convey, you may be able to like this more than the average score is saying here. Is it a triumph of homosexual love - it has something in it that can be considered inclusive. But it also is badly made - low budget, acting wise and many more flaws one can find here. There is not much more to say here, other than that there is blood, but the sexual element is kept at a minimum here (hinted at). But even the violence that is there ... well it has been done better before. Which brings us back to the budget of course. Really only for hardcore horror fans ... and those who like the parallels this is giving us. Love bites and all that. A sour note ending is not helping either by the way - but it is in tune with the mediocre (at best) beginning ...
This film begins at a clandestine laboratory somewhere in Romania with research being conducted on living human subjects. To that effect, a nurse by the name of "Izabella" (Jessica Alonzo) enters one of the locked rooms to administer some kind of medication and upon doing so is savagely bitten by the patient. Realizing that she will now become a test subject she escapes from the laboratory leaving the lead scientist to handle the chaos that follows. The scene then shifts to America where a single woman by the name of "Jennifer" (Natalie Martins) is being pressured by some of her female colleagues to go to a night club with them. She reluctantly agrees and it's during this time that she meets Izabella who seduces her and not only infects her with the same virus but subsequently turns her into a vampire in the process. What Izabella doesn't realize, however, is that the police have identified her as a suspect into several murders recently committed within the city and they are rapidly closing in on her location. Now rather than reveal any more, I will just say that I happened to see the poster for this movie while browsing the internet and thought it might be an interesting film to check out. Sadly, I was very disappointed overall due to a number of rather obvious flaws. For starters, the director (Charlie Steeds) seems to think that scenes involving gay and lesbian sexuality somehow meshes well with modern vampire lore. From what I understand, he initially filmed an orgy scene of that nature but was prohibited by the producer from including it into the final release. Personally, I thought the scenes of a sexual nature he was allowed to include weren't all that important to the overall story anyway. So, whether he was trying to stir up some controversy or make a point of some kind didn't really matter. But that's just my personal opinion and others may disagree. Regardless, there were two other issues which stood out even more with the first being Izabella's phony accent which became worse the longer the film lasted. The other problem concerned the fangs worn by Izabella which looked much too cheap and artificial-even for a low budget production of this nature. For what it's worth, there were a couple of good things to note with the acting on the part of Natalie Martins and Peter Nofsgard (as her gay roommate "Jack") being solid enough for the most part. Likewise, the lighting and background music was also adequate as well. Be that as it may, none of these attributes were even remotely good enough to compensate for the problems noted earlier and I have rated this film accordingly. Below average.
I quite like the (very) basic premise of this, but I don't know why? It's hard to see past the bad script, acting, effects and low budget... Oh, and bad attempts at humour and erm... everything else really. Actually, I don't know why I'm not marking this lower because it's really not good. However, it has something going for it and I don't know what? It might genuinely be because it's so naff. This is the only vampire movie I've ever seen where the vampires lair is the grotty basement of a local pub with a few candles and curtains hung around the place - becos it's earotiiicccc...
The cinematography is good, with clear colours and scenery. The music in the opening credits was awesome, as was the credit sequence with the blood / water clouds and the neon pink font. I loved that, and alone that put this higher than so much stuff I watched recently. The music throughout is excellent. The movie was actually shot by someone who cared, and the director actually did a good job in my opinion since the film looks very stylish, day shots, night shots, inside and outside. There is a dramatic visual change from the night world such as the night club and seduction scene with the vampire compared to the daylight of the main character and her friends/etc. However, this movie has a simple plot and really the script should have been better to achieve the story. For example they have the witness who is married to the vamp, in a straight jacket in a tiny interrogation room. He sees blood and lunges at the detective, then a guard shoots him in the face with an mp5. All of this seems extremely over the top, and I think a writer/director with more experience would have toned this down and set up the scene to be more realistic, if the end goal was the witness vampire to be killed before giving up any information I can think of literally 10 ways of doing this better. I think what this movie needs to go to the next level is some better editing, it was a little choppy in places. Also some of the acting was off, and some of the dialogue was a little too expected/cliche from some characters. This movie offers nothing really that wasn't achieved in 'Vampires' from John Carpenter, for example, or the blade series of films. Sadly this comes across as a waste of time, see as written in other reviews. Anyway I love the synthwave/retrowave theme across the whole picture as well as the stylish visuals and lighting; the nightclub scene with the vampire seducing the main character for example was sexy even if a little cheesy. The sound track was a big bonus. 5/10.
