Publisher's Summary In a world devastated by nuclear war with humanity on the edge of extinction, aliens finally make contact. They rescue those humans they can, keeping most survivors in suspended animation while the aliens begin the slow process of rehabilitating the planet. When Lilith Iyapo is "awakened", she finds that she has been chosen to revive her fellow humans in small groups by first preparing them to meet the utterly terrifying aliens, then training them to survive on the wilderness that the planet has become. But the aliens cannot help humanity without altering it forever. Bonded to the aliens in ways no human has ever known, Lilith tries to fight them even as her own species comes to fear and loathe her. A stunning story of invasion and alien contact by one of science fiction's finest writers. ©1987 Octavia E. Butler (P)2014 Audible Inc.

The best parts of this intro to the series are:*you get instantly interested *it's much different than other post-apocalyptic lit*the aliens are REALLY original with truly different ideals, looks. chemistry, and goals.Very captivating read! I pulled over on the highway to download the next book and start the listen!!!Couldn't wait!
An alien culture rescues the humans that are left on earth after an atomic war. They look nothing like humans and they have a very advanced culture. With their advanced knowledge of drugs they heal many of the wounded and burnt animals and people. They attempt to recreate the ecology of the earth so the humans, once healed, can return and start a new society. Many of the humans refuse to communicate with the aliens because they are ugly and speak another language. The author reveals the weaknesses of humans when forced to be lead by those who look, act, and communicate differently than earthlings.
The story is completely immersive, even if the alien world it takes place in is difficult to comprehend. The story is a unique take on the sci fi genre- the bizarre relationships between consent, autonomy, and colonization. This book gave me a lot to think about.
