Old-school kyokushin / goju ryu type kumite. This type of sparring is necessary to practice the full spectrum of Karate techniques present in kata. It is not a replacement for knockdown kumite or other sports rulesets, it is a separate part of training specifically purposed to train for a real unarmed 1 on 1 fight. The only rules are common sense safety precautions for the longevity of practitioners. Meaning no permanently damaging techniques such as eye-gouges, groin strikes, high power strikes to the back of the head or joints, etc. Open-hand strikes are used for practical habit building, as striking with unprotected fists on a human skull has a very high risk of injury (especially to the puncher).
