As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, major cities are thriving. Deeply linked with one another, they have become magnets for increasing flows of wealth, talent and foreign investment. But at the same time, many places are missing out – often just different regions in the same countries. Drained of capital, skills and ideas, these are the places where economic opportunities are lacking and ‘populism’ can thrive Radical new research from the London School of Economics’ Global Investment – Local Development team explains the mistakes that many regions are making and offers solutions on how to move forward. In this film, David Arnold, Riccardo Crescenzi and Mara Giua give an overview of their cutting-edge project. Addressing the growing disparity between the places plugged into 21st Century flows of investment, talent and knowledge, with those that aren’t is one of the defining challenges of our time. Cutting-edge research from the London School of Economics’ GILD team addresses this question head-on, using radical new techniques to explain why this is happening and, most importantly, what can be done. In this film, David Arnold, Riccardo Crescenzi and Sergio Petralia dig deep into the heart of the issue. Drawing insights from lost European explorers, clever chimpanzees, mobile hunter-gatherers, neuroscience, ancient bones, and the human genome, Joseph Henrich, author of The Secret of Our Success, will discuss how our collective intelligence has propelled our species’ evolution. Joseph Henrich (@JoHenrich) is a professor at Harvard University in the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology, and holds a Canada Research Chair at UBC, where he's a professor in both Economics and Psychology. His research focuses on cultural evolution, and culture-driven genetic evolution. He’s conducted fieldwork in Peru, Chile
