The Humans

Science Fiction & Fantasy
سال2013
دورانیہ8h 11m

Publisher's Summary The critically acclaimed author of The Radleys shares a clever, heartwarming, and darkly insightful novel about an alien who comes to Earth to save humans from themselves. When an extraterrestrial visitor arrives on Earth, his first impressions of the human species are less than positive. Taking the form of Professor Andrew Martin, a leading mathematician at Cambridge University, the visitor wants to complete his task and go back home, to the planet he comes from, and a utopian society of immortality and infinite knowledge. He is disgusted by the way humans look, what they eat, the wars they witness on the news, and totally baffled by such concepts of love and family. But as time goes on, he starts to realize there may be more to this weird species than he has been led to believe. He drinks wine, reads Emily Dickinson, listens to Talking Heads, and begins to bond with the family he lives with, in disguise. In picking up the pieces of the professor's shattered personal life, the narrator sees hope and redemption in the humans' imperfections and begins to question the very mission that brought him there. A mission that involves not only thwarting human progress... but murder. Praised by The New York Times as "a novelist of great seriousness and talent" author Matt Haig delivers an unlikely story about human nature and the joy found in the very messiness of life on Earth. The Humans is a funny, compulsively readable tale that playfully and movingly explores the ultimate subject - ourselves. ©2013 Matt Haig (P)2013 Simon & Schuster Audio

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you? Absolutely nothing.Do not waste your timeWould you ever listen to anything by Matt Haig again?noWho would you have cast as narrator instead of Mark Meadows?does not matter, book was awfulWhat reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment? that I need to get my money back

You may not be inspired and radically change your life after reading this one, but you won;t regret spending a credit on it. The story is slightly above average at best, but the analytical process of a 'fish out of water' comes across as humorous and entertaining, and in the end, didn't disappoint.

Would you try another book from Matt Haig and/or Mark Meadows? No thanksWhat was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)It got real preachy towards the end. What does Mark Meadows bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?If it wasn't an audio book and if it were not for Mark, I most likely would not have finished this one. Did The Humans inspire you to do anything? Not really. Any additional comments? The story is not bad, it's just not very memorable. In a year I won't remember any of it.

What disappointed you about The Humans?Too much description about someone/something coming into the human world, while at the same time incredibly knowledgeable. It didn't gel. What about Mark Meadows’s performance did you like? The narrator was saddled with a difficult story and did a great job.Any additional comments?I waited too long to listen to the book and couldn't return it.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more? ChildrenHas The Humans turned you off from other books in this genre? What genre is this?Children's literature? You didn’t love this book...but did it have any redeeming qualities? I think children might find it interesting.Any additional comments?A waste of my credit.

Any additional comments? This book was recommended to me by a friend and I've listened to it several times since then.I.Absolutely.Loved.It.I love all things sci-fi so the fact that the main character is an alien was a bonafide plus for me.His views on human culture and how we interact with each other was poignant and eye-opening and funny, albeit, slightly uncomfortable at times. This is a very special listen and it's so well-narrated that you can get lost in this word!My favorite part of the book is the letter he leaves for his "son" towards the end.Words to live by, for sure.Don't miss out on this listen if it's at all possible. We should all be so lucky.

Really struggled to finish this one, as it followed a dreadfully predictable trajectory. Alien finds humans disgusting at first, but by the end discovers being human is just so magically enchanting and perfect. No surprises here folks.

At first, this was a fresh take on the "naive to human culture alien" trope. I enjoyed the rich world of the alien's home culture and other alien species' traditions. And then, the narrator does not learn anything for the next 8 hours and you have to slog through to find out what happens to the other main characters. The narrator constantly acts in his own worst interest even with previous experiences that should have taught him otherwise. As a plus, Mark Meadows gives a 10/10 performance that made it possible to finish. Also, a minor niggle that did not affect my rating but was especially annoying in the moment: the Drake Equation does not have any exponents, they are subscripts. Not sure if the mistake there was in the original writing or in the reading performance.

This book is worth reading - not typical of the titles I usually read or listen to but excellent- so happy I decided to take a chance and step outside my usual picks.
