Perspectives is a series of conversations with successful Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) alumni. Alumni share their experiences and insights about making transitions from graduate school to careers within and outside academia. In this session, Dr. Lyndsey McMillon-Brown, research electrical engineer at NASA Glenn Research Center talks about her work and how institutions can make research spaces more inclusive. Joined by Danica Tisdale-Fisher, Ph.D. Assistant Dean for Diversity at GSAS, and Tarek Fadel, Ph.D., Assistant Director of the Marble Center for Cancer Nanomedicine at MIT.

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Commencement ceremony. Yale President Peter Salovey and Yale GSAS Dean Lynn Cooley address the graduates and confer degrees. Keynote speaker: Professor Akiko Iwasaki, Waldemar Von Zedtwitz Professor of Immunobiology and Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and Professor of Epidemiology (Microbial Diseases); Professor of Molecular Cellular and Developmental Biology; Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Yale University Chaplain Sharon Kugler closes the ceremony with a benediction.
Dr. Robert Harper-Mangels, Associate Dean for Admissions and Financial Support, explains the ins and outs of applying for fellowships and grants as a graduate student. Topics covered include applying for grants in a funded program, where to find opportunities, creating a realistic budget, requesting letters of recommendation, and more. The presentation is followed by a Q&A session moderated by Dr. Stephen Pitti, Director of the Center for the Study of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration.
Where Do I Go from Yale? is an annual event hosted by the Yale Graduate School Alumni Association (GSAA), the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the Yale Alumni Association (YAA) Careers, Life, and Yale program. Featuring career panels, discussion groups, and networking, the event taps into the wealth of knowledge and experience of Yale GSAS alums who have gone before you. It is an opportunity to explore career pathways and consider the myriad opportunities available to Yale graduate students. With special sessions for a range of fields (humanities, STEM, non-profit, etc.), and special conversations around diversity in the workplace and start-ups, participants will leave the event with renewed inspiration and concrete action items. Degree ceremony for Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Classes of 2020 and 2021 Alumni, Saturday, May 14, 2022 at Woolsey Hall. Featuring remarks by Dean Lynn Cooley and the calling of graduates’ names in celebration of their degrees.
This panel discussion features three past recipients of the GSAS Graduate Mentor Award: Kelly Shue (Professor of Finance, Yale School of Management), Joanne Meyerowitz (Arthur Unobskey Professor of History and Professor of American Studies), and Gary Brudvig (Benjamin Silliman Professor of Chemistry). The conversation addresses approaches to mentorship, how to cultivate relationships with mentors, and how to improve communication and interpersonal interactions. Introduction by Lynn Cooley, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Moderated by Matthew Tanico, Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Life.
The Graduate Matriculation Ceremony is the official beginning of the graduate experience. During the program, President Salovey and Dean Cooley deliver remarks. The graduate acapella singing group, the Citations, perform. Chaplain Sharon Kugler delivers a benediction.
In this interactive discussion with the GSAS alumni community, Dean Cooley and former Graduate School Alumni Association Board Chair James Shulman discuss the current state of graduate education at Yale. Dean Cooley describes both the current goals of the Graduate School and some of the accomplishments from her past eight years as dean. Moderated by James Shulman (’93 Ph.D., Renaissance Studies)
