While watching this movie i was wondering why this movie was provided on a VOD service.....with such awesome stunts ,a strong script and brilliant acting this movie deserved a wide release .I was never a big Gibson fan but now i think i like his style of action thrillers never meant to say that i didn't like lethal weapon series but this in a way is more simplistic and tough. This movie is seriously meant for fans of tough action movies and is not for people looking out for a highly intelligent action movie. This is a smartly and slickly written piece of work which definitely has its ups and downs. The story is nothing new, first half hour is Mel settling into prison life ,but when the action begins it's a very brutal affair. The ups of the movie include the sublimely realistic acting of all the lead actors with Mel Gibson leading from the front,a tightly and smartly written screenplay(courtesy Gibson)and a smart yet simplistic approach from the director. The downsides include the quality of shots taken which i think they should have taken with a much higher budget in hand and also a pretty unimpressive trailer. If only it had been marketed well and had a wide release this movie would have hit bulls eye. All in all this movie is a Mel Gibson show which is highly gripping, thrilling and which I found is all the more absurdly entertaining. Thanks to all the folks who read the review.CHEEEERSSS........!!!

Sorry folks, but although Mel Gibson walked through this film without a hair on his head turning, I thought this film was just awful from start to finish. I normally like Mel Gibson because I can never talk him seriously, perhaps too much Lethal Weapon. I like him in tongue in cheek tough guy roles, which is why I thought I would enjoy this movie. And this was a film I had looked forward to. This was a film that disappointed me. I might add that lacking English sub titles didn't help. Half the time I couldn't understand what was going on. Mel Gibson was rough and tough, but ultimately this film was disappointing.
Guess that lots of people are simply happy to see Mel Gibson back again, in a movie like this. And I'm also glad but lets be fair please, this is by no means a great or highly original/clever movie, even though it still likes to see itself as such. It's fairly obviously that after all of the controversy, Gibson has to start at the bottom of the ladder again. This is a fairly cheap looking and not that it's having a horrible look to it but it still is very obvious that not a lot of money got put into it. Nothing wrong with that of course, as long as the movie is good. And it is good but only just half maybe. On the one hand it is definitely being a maintaining enough crime-action-thriller vehicle for Mel Gibson but it is never a movie that becomes truly a great or surprising one. The story in my opinion was being a bit too simplistic and also definitely far from likely. Besides, the movie could had used some better and more clever twists to it. The sort of stuff that can make these sort of action-crime movies great to watch. Mel Gibson definitely still has it in him. I'm sure that lots of people would had been in doubt about it if Gibson would still be good and convincing enough as a likable tough guy, not just because of all of the controversy surrounding his person but also because of his age. After all, he is starting to get close to his 60's now but he definitely is still as good and convincing in this sort of role as he was 10, 20 and 30 years ago. Perhaps the thing that makes this movie feel a bit simplistic, are its restricted settings. For most of its running time it is taking place inside a Mexican prison, that looks nothing like a prison at all and is more like a small village, in which everything goes. It's also all a bit too ridicules to watch to be honest and the movie doesn't always flow very naturally and the way this entire movie progresses doesn't exactly add to the realism of this movie. This is a bit of a distracting element about the movie and also prevented me from truly ever getting into it, or feel involved with any of its characters. It's a movie that tries to be tough at times, which results in some graphic violence, that however doesn't always feels into tone with the rest of the movie and its main story and characters. This perhaps should had been more of a fun movie instead of a raw and violent one, which it is now. Definitely a maintaining enough movie but nothing you really should be running out for to see. It just isn't quite original or special enough for that. 7/10 http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
saw this movie today , with not very high expectations but as i started watching it had my full attention ,,, the jail sequences are amazing , i would say it had a slight touch of Qunetin Tarantino's style of direction and to be fair everyone loves Tarantino . it is also co-written by Mel Gibson and the story , the screenplay are amazing and so is the pacing of the movie . fans of tough action cinema will find plenty to enjoy. if u liked Mel's payback (1999) you will love this ... even though the chances of making money at cinema are quite low but i would definitely recommend this movie trust me u will not regret it . i would give it 9/10
It's been years since Mel has done a movie like this. This movie is just good, solid entertainment. Here we have a nice tight plot, spot on humor, believable and exciting action, solid acting by all involved, all within a small yet intriguing setting. Mel is essentially playing his Payback character (from what I've read it is in fact the same person even though he isn't named as such). The movie starts off with an exciting car chase in the desert near the Mexican border. Apparently a certain job has not gone as planned and Mel is driving his hardest to elude the authorities. During the course of the chase he eventually lands on the opposite side of the border and is taken in to custody and imprisoned by the local Mexican police. This isn't your ordinary prison though, it's more of a shanty town that's been surrounded by 20ft concrete walls. Prisoners here are allowed to work, rent homes, shop, and have family living with them...as long as they come up with the cash. Mel has his work cutout for him figuring out how to get himself out of this jam and while he's working on it comes across and befriends a young child who is seemingly out of place in such a setting. He soon finds himself embroiled in a dangerous plot with enemies lining up on all sides. Like I said, good solid plot with fantastic pacing. Mel is great playing the wizened criminal. The child actor does a surprisingly adequate job of hanging in there with him. All in all this was just a good flick. Don't let the Mel hate keep you from watching it. This is Mel in his Lethal Weapon and Payback days.
Mel is back, and in a big way. Vastly entertaining, it didn't sell out with any heavy-handed social message, politicization, or tokenism, which, unfortunately, has been the cheating, conniving and slippery way that Hollywood has escaped having to put forth much (if any) cleverness or hard work in its offerings. I think that this was Mel's way of thumbing his nose at "Big Hollywood" in more ways than one and we get the benefit with a terrific, fast-moving and entertaining movie. Maybe not the most important movie in all of history, but easily the best humorous-action movie in the last 15 or 20 years, at least, since "Midnight Run." Certainly the most honest. For that, it gets 9/10. Some gruesome violence, but no T&A or other sexuality.
Fast moving, well paced and well constructed story, with excellent characterisation and some humorous moments to leaven the dark plot. Mel Gibson does a really fine job in the lead role, and is utterly believable as a tough, clever crook who's hard heart is moved by the plight of a mother and child threatened by powerful foes. Really great too to see the female lead played by someone who looks like a normal person (rather than some ridiculous super-model). It helps the female viewer empathise with the character so much more. The film is quite violent, though - be prepared. I spent part of the film with my hand over my eyes, but my bloodthirsty partner loved it. Definitely worth paying to see this at the cinema - you won't be disappointed.
He's a little old, he has demons swirling around (including his own), and there are a lot of people that plainly don't like him, but he still can come up with the goods in film. The movie is not half bad, and much like we've seen before in films of his as well as others, but I think Mel wanted to produce a film just like this considering his circumstances. He puts good people around him, and voila! Half decent flick. I've always like Gibson in films. He doesn't get enough credit for what he's accomplished cause he leads a tortured life and had burned a lot of bridges. It's hard to believe he worries about money, and we all know he does. His payroll and expenses are quite high. I'm not sure he enjoys it much. Real shame. Many would say he deserves what he gets..either way it goes. Others have covered the film, so I shared my thoughts about Mr. Gibson. The film is a lot like his Payback film several years ago. Easy enough to look up.
