Young Adult, unfortunately, is one of those Hollywood movies we wished we hadn't seen. in fact, we wish we could get our money back. Based on comments made by other viewers upon leaving the theatre after the movie, we weren't the only ones who were disappointed. and, here's a news flash for those critics who call Young Adult a comedy. it isn't! Several characters and scenarios are just plain sad and in no way humorous. There was no laughter in the theatre during any of the scenes. trust me, we all left the theatre scratching our heads. Why did we see THIS movie instead of Mission Impossible? Or Girl With the Dragon Tattoo? depressing.charlize theron is a good actress, but she can't save the movie. it's still pretty darn bad.
Have you ever known a friend that seems to have never moved past high school? They re-live those days for years after graduation. When you spend time with them all that they talk about are the "good ol' days"? Young Adult is a story written by Diablo Cody (Juno) and directed by Jason Reitman (Up In The Air) about a 37-year old woman, Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron), who still has a crush on her high school sweetheart, Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson). The problem is that Buddy has moved on, is now married and has just celebrated his first daughter's birth. After getting the baby announcement in an email, Mavis, a Young Adult novel series ghostwriter, decides she will drive back home to Mercury, Minnesota, a small hick town to win him back and free him from the slavery of marriage and fatherhood. What a wonderful movie, the entire cast is marvelous and lead by the standout performance by Charlize Theron who plays the lead character Mavis with a wonderful unabashed way. The interaction of Charlize and Patton Oswalt character is the strength of this movie as they are both two broken 30 something adults and their love scene is how they are one as Charlize is broken emotionally and mentally while Oswalt is physically broken. I found it refreshing with the love scene which unlike Julianne Moore constant nudity in her films it was more moving than shocking. I also love the scene at the baby naming where Charlenes character tells of her miscarriage and possibly the reason why the picture of the baby many have started this ill fated quest to reunite with her former love Buddy. I love this movie because of the rawness and the story and would highly recommend it.
Growing old can be tough for a lot of people. This film gives an intriguing examination of this fact and incorporates it into a fine story. In one of the best films of 2011, Charlize Theron generates well-deserved Oscar Buzz for her believable performance as Mavis Gary, a tween-novel writer who comes to terms with her adulthood. I also must compliment the performance of Patton Oswalt, an underrated actor who succeeds as a disabled man who befriends Mavis. This film's story could have turned out to be another dreadful romantic comedy, but its execution makes it truly special. Every scene is shot with subtlety and finesse to show off the well-blended comedic and dramatic aspects. As you look at the style of directing, you will notice the true talent of Jason Reitman (along with the script-writing genius of Diablo Cody). After seeing this, I am quite interested in checking out Juno. Hopefully, it will be as good as this selection of cinematic gold.
If you like shows like Louie, the you'd like this movie. I laughed a lot during it, the dialog and characters are funny, mean, sarcastic, sad and awkward all at once...much like real life. I thought the main character might actually get the married guy because she kissed him, so that was a nice twist too. The world of this movie seemed very real. The idea of the small town where some high school friends stay and other leave or that the same people still live with their problems in high school or come back to relive them...it seems very true to life. I think this is as funny as Juno but because it isn't as cute, it will probably not see watched by as many people. I think you need a certain type of humor to find this funny and I do. I would watch this movie again.
5/10 - a promising, original comedy that is a let down in virtually every way possible
What could be entertaining about watching a self worshipping person realizing their life has meant nothing, so they go and ruin others lives to feel better about themselves? Yes, that was a run on sentence. Beware of people that claim to love their pets but generally neglect them except for the times they want to show them off or need a security blanket.
Young Adult is much funnier and infinitely more savage than Cody's earlier collaboration with director Jason Reitman, the cute but rather cosy Juno.
This is a very funny comedy, unusual in its kind and truly enjoyable. The beautiful and stylish Charlize Theron is brilliant in this movie. I loved it.
Seriously!!!!!!!!!!!! How can this movie be getting the average score it has? Sitting through this movie would have to be one of the most painful experiences I have had and is a portion of my life I would rather have back. The plot was so boring and slow and I actually found myself constantly checking the elapsed time the movie had been going as I just wanted the whole experience to be over! The story was lame and didn't go anywhere and I actually thought this title was supposed to be a comedy but it is far from ever remotely being funny. I enjoyed Up In The Air and haven't seen Juno but I'm sure Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody haven't struck gold with this release. I don't normally write reviews, but I felt that this movie was so bad I just had to get it off my chest.
