Being an Aretha fan since her early days at Columbia Records I was hoping that this movie would be the quintessential bio about the well guarded life of the Queen of Soul. Sadly it wasn't. Miss Hudson gave a stellar performance in a tedious movie with a cast that was more like extras than a supporting cast. The editing was atrocious with bits and pieces which left you wondering who were the important people in her life and how did they help overcome her demons. I did not watch Genius: Aretha the 8 part TV series but will now hoping to fill in the missing pieces of her life.
6/10 - overly long and it tries to cover too much of her life for one movie, but Jennifer Hudson brings it as the Queen of Soul who triumphed in life despite her countless adversities.
When you tell a story of a legend, give to someone who can handle. Example bryan singer, ridley Scott, please put more names on the comments I'm so upset and mad... Hell give to the lady who directored dirty dancing...
Let's face it, Jennifer Hudson has a good voice.....BUT, she NOT Aretha Franklin and pales in comparison! It was a lot like watching Dream Girls all over. She is a singer, not an actress no matter how many Academy Awards she gets. Forrest Whitaker, who is a great actor, needs better roles that don't relegate him to old man status. He is worthy of meatier roles that don't always have to deliver a message. If Jennifer Hudson is nominated for an Academy Award as she surely will be the nomination will be a tribute to Aretha Franklin and NOT Jennifer Hudson's acting talent . There are far more talented actresses.
