source: Fatal Visit
The movie is based on the murder case so I expect more exciting elements will be coming up. But unfortunately all clues look too obvious and blunt, I just manage to figure out the whole story plot after 15 minute. Indeed, the story itself isn't bad. The director tries to create mysterious atmosphere by using unrelated fragments. With the existing setting and his directing skills, it fails to give audience a reasonable level of tension . Compared to Korean thriller, It looks too flat and predicable. Also, Sammi's acting is a bit weird and unnatural.
I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into here when I sat down in 2021 to watch the 2019 movie "Fatal Visit". But with it being a Hong Kong movie that I hadn't already seen, it hardly mattered what it was about. Of course I had to watch it. And I will say that "Fatal Visit" actually turned out to be an adequately entertaining thriller. Sure, this wasn't groundbreaking in the thriller genre, but writer Candace Chong actually managed to come up with a storyline that proved to be enjoyable and not all that predictable. The pacing of the storyline is a little bit up and down, but luckily that was saved by a good cast and some nice performances. I must say that this 2019 movie from director Yuen-Leung Poon definitely showcased Sammi Cheng's talent to portray more than just your usual romantic comedy characters - which she has been doing for ages. And she really carried the movie quite well. I was especially impressed with her performance when she was imprisoned, seeing her without make-up and showing that kind of emotion and vulnerability was just phenomenal. They had a good cast ensemble for this movie, as I mentioned earlier. I can't claim to be familiar with Dawei Tong though, and Charlene Choi certainly held up her role with her performance. But "Fatal Visit" was Sammi Cheng's movie, no doubt about that. If you enjoy thrillers then give this 2019 Hong Kong movie a watch, as it somewhat differs from the usual standard formula used in the thriller genre. I am rating "Fatal Visit" a six out of ten stars.
