This series is a disaster. I am a huge Matthew Inman fan and have been following oatmeal since the start. I love a good story and I spend a lot of time watching cartoons with stupid humor. This is just... Cringe. I feel terrible writing that. I feel someone somewhere has put their input on Inman's writing or Inman just cannot write a series. It isn't insane or strange in the way say Spongebob, adventure time or any of the other American adult cartoons are. It is just cringe. There is too much suspension of belief of logic needed and it is a chore trying to go through a single episode. I usually try to give every series I watch a fair hand shake of watching the first 3 episodes before calling it quits. This was by far the hardest to get through and I feel disheartened because I wanted to like this series. I really really wanted this to be good. I say this not because of expectations being crashed but because I genuinely like Matthew Inman's online persona and wanted it to succeed. I feel bad trashing a show who's author I respect for his other works. Again I am not writing this or being critical because my expectations were shattered or I had certain threshold of quality I demand. It is intrinsically bad writing.
Letting my nine year old write a blurb down below because he'd like to see another season from them. As a parent, with a fairly mature child, I was fine with letting him watch the show. He loves playing the card game with his grandparents and uncles and he was really excited that they were making an animated series. It's funny enough and mostly what you'd expect from a project with Mike Judge's involvement (we're still a couple of years away from Bevis and Butthead - both old and new). Now that I've met the character requirements, here's Walter's review: I love the series, the story and the game I want them to make a season 2 of exploding kittens.
l loved it
Exploding kittens takes the chaos of the card game and captures it in animated form making it a fun watch relatable to the annoyances of humanity, however instead of using the unique designs and outlandish characters from inman's wide range of card games he falls on a formulistic story mocking common sit com tropes. The creator has brief Easter eggs and references to his games and comics but it doesn't actually seem to relate to the game play of any of them. We need to see how having his characters and mythological characters and cryptids in heaven and hell actually makes this world unique. Season 2 should build the world based on the card game and those included in show not just the worst of earths society and religion.
