This film deserves every bit of praise and more. It was cinematically pleasing, features a beautiful score, and moving queer representation. Each of the characters is well fleshed out and portrayed soulfully. Harry Styles, Emma Corrin and David Dawson, along with the rest of the cast, did a stunning job bringing each of the characters to life. This film touches on the pain, fear and hope that comes with being gay in a time where it was illegal. The different relationships are done in such a tasteful and engaging way- the loving friendship between Marion and Tom, the love between Patrick and Tom, and the genuine friendship between the three. This film is not only a must-see, but a massive step in the right direction in bringing to light the struggles and love experienced by queer people. Each scene is thoughtfully shot, and speaks volumes. The characters may have lost time, but as an audience, each second of the film is worth it. Wonderful job to the director and everyone who worked on this project, truly a beautiful film.
Brokeback Mountain perfected the tragically doomed period gay love story and "My Policeman" borrows more than a few beats from the original masterpiece. Emma Corrin is basically a more naive and developed version of Michelle Williams's character, both remarkable in each part to be fair. The whole thing has a sightly deja-vu feeling and is classic to a fault. I guess this explains the bad reviews but, truth is, this is an absolutely fine film. It certainly didn't deserve all the hate especially compared to that other and really terrible Harry Styles vehicule. Here his soft spoken acting perfectly fits the blunt straightforwardly straight character. The harsh selfishness of youngTom is the most fascinating and refreshing element of the film. My Policeman uses the traditional biographic structure of back and forth timelines to great results. The idealism of the 50s sequences full of gorgeous arts, elegant flats, cosy countryside and rapturous love is in stark contrast with the gloomy grey suburban present days. It is true than the movie would have benefited from a more balanced use of the present time rather than just being the obvious reminder of a world of redemption and social progress. But My Policeman is gripping as an exploration of the dark places romance can put us through.
Not even close. Those that think this is entertainment are delusional. Nothing really happens, and it is a depressing sad film trying to capitalize on the topic. It is clearly evident that the script was written ticking all the boxes for the entertainment environment of paid subscription streaming services. At best this is a made for TV Monday night show that you can put on for background noise, if you need that to help you sleep. I agree with those saying that this film is "Hollow" "Dumb" "Boring" etc... because they nailed it. This saying it is a contender for Oscar best film, well, you need to get out more.
Movie is heart wrenching but equally beautiful. Explores the story of a gay couple in 1950s and the hardships of their love. Harry styles is phenomenonal, so is David, Emma and all of the cast. A must watch!! Gonna watch it atleast a million times and cry my eyes out everytime Harry did it truthfully. He understands Tom's character to its very core, David is so beyond astounding as always and Emma was so amazing in Marion's role she felt the character and her story and feelings and played it beautifully. The older cast was also super awsome, the way that they meld into the roles is breath taking and to know some of them lived/living through that and felt all those emotions in real life is gut wrenching. THIS MOVIE IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!
I can hardly believe the 6.8 rating on here for this wonderful life long romance journey. The screenplay is brilliant - but perhaps some people marked it down because in fact its not just fiction. Similar stories have continued for generations. The story of forbidden love and conformity collide together in this surprising piece of excellent work. The (surprising) cast (young and older) were all excellent in this forbidden love triangle. This story is not make believe; whilst I am not saying the storyline is common - I am saying its not unusual for those times. Perhaps less so these days. The low score on here surprises me - considering much higher scores are given to series/films that are complete codswallop. Give it a go - but its not for the bigoted or squeamish. SPOILER ALERT: there are no gun chases/Shoot outs not car chases.
