I watched it for 40 minutes waiting for something funny to be said or to happen. Couldn't take it anymore. Slow and boring, uninteresting guy with an uninteresting life. Was it supposed to be a comedy???!!! God help us... or help Hollywood.
source: Standing Up, Falling Down
Loved it. Don't let the poor title and lower profile lead actor fool you. It is a well written, heart warming story with an excellent script. The lead actor, while not good enough to be a successful stand up comedian, is certainly a very talented actor, one to look out for. Loved seeing Billy Crystal in a multi-dimensional, dramatic character role while still retaining his signature charm.
This film will never win an award for best original story but it is 90mins very well spent. It is well written, well cast and beautifully executed. Basically a story about life that is sincere and heartfelt, none of the actors seem like they are reading from script and it flows very naturally. Unless you're looking for action and thrills then it is hard not to love this film and all of the characters in it. Well worth watching.
All in the title. Just adding cuz I need to have a more lengthy review.
I started it obviously a fan of Crystal and Schwartz, but you never can tell what these lesser known films are going to deliver. This was surprisingly poignant, funny and universal in a way that anyone with past mistakes can relate to. It has a different vibe, but the story reminded me of Garden State in the sense of the main character coming home and having to come to terms with things in his past. The timing of the jokes and the pacing back and forth was spot on, and they managed to show real drama and versatility in a small but entertaining story.
Standing Up, Falling Down is one of the movies that captures you that you don't even think about something else. Therefore, if you're stressed and want a getaway, this is your movie.
The film is a bittersweet drama with comedic touches dealing with the subjects of regret, loss and addiction. Both Crystal and Schwartz are excellent although I felt the plot was oversimpistic and fell foul to the usual Hollywood cliches but thankfully moved at a pace which allowed it to be forgiven. I felt there was the possibility of a really great film here, as most of the ingredients were present but as always most films now get stuck in a rut of losing their subtlety and simply over repeat to enforce simple concepts about dealing with life. The film is worth a watch to enjoy the chemistry between Schwartz and Crystal but it felt that there should have been more of this.
This just feels like a vanity piece to me. I know nothing about the main star or director/writer, and after watching this I don't care to ever know more. The main actor is so unlikeable it's actually sort of remarkable. Billy Crystal will make your skin crawl. Whoever wrote this script is so out of touch with most 9-5'ers reality that I can practically smell the trust fund through the screen. I only watched for as long as I did (not long) because it was fascinatingly bad, and I had a free trial to STARZ. Even then, I want my small amount of time back, you (probably) nepotistic boors.
What a great antidote to the crash bang wallop trajectory of many movies. People emotions mistakes and don't forget regret. It never goes away. Billy Chrystal is superb and the rest of the cast pretty good also. Very enjoyable.
